2015 Top 184 Compiled Prospect List

Finally, the overall compilation of top prospects! What’s better than a top 100 prospect list? Twenty-one of them! Every time a player appears on a list, he is given 151 minus his ranking number of points (A ranking of No. 1 gives 150 points). All of the points are added up and the player with the highest total is ranked at the top. The reason I do this instead of taking the average ranking is very simple: It’s better.

Take Mike Foltynewicz for example. He appears on seven lists with an average ranking of 69. However, his total points ranking is 90. We must take into account the fact that not all players are ranked by all lists, so an average ranking is misleading.

I split the list into two – regular and fantasy. Each type of list focuses on different parts of a player and they should be separate. I found 13 regular lists and eight fantasy lists.

Unfortunately, not all lists have the same criteria and as a result, many did not rank Cuban imports Yoan Moncada, Rusney Castillo, or Yasmany Tomas. In order to keep a good ranking system, I placed the average of each of these player’s rankings from the other lists in those empty slots. This is how Castillo placed as the number 28 prospect, even though he was only ranked on five of the 13 lists. Raisel Iglesias and Jung-ho Kang were not even ranked by all lists where they were eligible so I did not include any extra rankings for them.

Moncada was a different animal altogether, as he signed so late and lists that may have ranked him came out before he was eligible. Baseball America said he would rank as the number 10 prospect and others have said he is similar in value to J.P. Crawford (ranked 19). So for the lists that did not rank Moncada, I gave him a ranking of 15. This slots him in as the number 11 prospect in baseball, just behind Miguel Sano, whom Ben Badler compared Moncada to back in January.

I will post an analysis comparing each of these lists and link it once it goes live. Here is a spreadsheet with all of the rankings together. You can view the team compilations for 2015 here and compiled prospect lists going back to 2011 here. I also have done a lot of prospect ranking and statistical analysis, including creating my own prospect comparison system called JAVIER and you can find those links here. That link also includes a downloadable database for every top 100 prospect ranking I could find since 1990, but does not yet include the 2015 rankings. Enjoy!

Very informative and helpful! Thanks for posting along with the XLS. Hoping you will keep up the good work.

  2. nyybaseball2 says:

I am very surprised to see how long some of the outfielders are ranked. I would put Liriano, Phillips, Hill, Williams, and Conforto in the top 100. Those guys have a lot of value, especially in deeper leagues.
